Ekaterina

2014/12x44mins/Russia

A stunning, historical and epic production about one of the most important women of 18th Century Europe, the Russian Empress Ekaterina Velikaya - CATHERINE THE GREAT.

In 1744, Sophia Augusta Frederica of Anhalt-Zerbst, daughter of German Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst, was chosen by Empress Elizabeth as bride for her son and heir to the
Russian throne, Peter III . As Peter’s young wife, she entered the marriage naively, but shortly thereafter, began seriously preparing for her future role as the Russian Ruler. She amazed all, throwing herself into studying the Russian Language, culture, history and Orthodox Religious teachings.

Peter showed little interest or respect for Ekaterina, resenting her presence, which resulted in her seeking affection outside the marriage. The birth of their son did little to improve this situation and Peter III openly questioned his paternity of the child. As soon as he became Emperor, he began to threaten his wife with divorce - or worse. In an attempt to avoid this terrible fate, Ekaterina organized a coup d'état, which resulted in Peter’s assassination. She became the eighth Empress of All Russia, Ekaterina II, whose reign lasted thirty-four years. Historians describe her reign as “The Golden age of the Russian Empire” under which Russia was revitalized, growing larger and stronger than ever, and became recognized as one of the great powers of Europe.
